Update on Earthquake in Japan
Overnight, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern Japan causing severe damage and sparked tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean.
We are saddened to report that a Honda associate was killed and more than 30 were injured in the disaster.
We currently have one Honda Canada Associate who is in Japan. He was contacted this morning and is confirmed as OK. In addition, one Associate from Honda of Canada Mfg. currently in Japan is also confirmed as OK. All of the Associates on assignment in Japan from the U.S. production companies have been contacted. In the interest of safety, we have suspended all travel to Japan for the next few days until the situation can be better understood.
The earthquake was the largest in the history of Japan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all Japanese citizens, and in particular those whose lives have been affected by this disaster.
This earthquake has impacted Honda Japan's operations. Plants in Tochigi, Saitama and Hamamatsu have stopped production at least through Monday, and the Automobile R&D Center in Tochigi has stopped operations until further notice. The Suzuka Factory stopped and then resumed production. However, it too will close on Monday. The Kumamoto Factory in southern Japan continues to operate.
At this time, there is no immediate impact to Honda’s operations in North America, though some interruption to the supply chain may be possible.
Honda’s operations in North America and globally will continue to work closely with and support the recovery of Honda’s operations in Japan.
